Included are files on the Des Moines Association of Fine Arts, 1938-1940, containing material on the 1939 Worlds Fair and the WPA; the J.B. Speed Museum, 1950-1964, containing research material for Harris' FOURTEEN SEASONS OF ART ACCESSIONS IN KENTUCKY 1947-1960; the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum, containing newsletters, executive committee meeting minutes, letters, budget reports, by-laws and printed material; the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, containing material on the Edison Institute; American Federation of the Arts, 1969-1972; and the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, 1973-1974.

Construction on the original building was completed in 1927. An example of the neoclassic style of architecture, it cost $800,000 to build and equip. It was enlarged in 1954 with funds bequeathed by Dr. Preston Pope Satterwhite. In 1973, a contemporary art wing was added, containing an expanded library, an auditorium, and art galleries.
